Diane’s Kitchen Note

When I spotted this gem in a Betty Crocker booklet, I knew it was a keeper. In the 1960s, ham glazes were a bragging right.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of ham works best for this recipe?
A fully cooked spiral or shank ham works beautifully. If yours is larger than 3–4 pounds, simply double the glaze and bake a bit longer.

What should I do with leftover apples from the pie filling?
Don’t toss that vintage goodness! Store extra apples in the fridge and use them as a quick topping for oatmeal, pancakes, or even a bonus upside-down apple cake. (But if keeping them doesn’t work go ahead and discard.)

step by step instructions

🥣 Vintage Apple-Glazed Ham

  • Era: 1960s

  • Cuisine: Mid-Century American Dinner Classic

  • Vibe: Sweet & Savory

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • Bake Time: 1 hour (approx.)

  • Serves: 6–8

Ingredients:

  • 1 fully cooked ham (about 3–4 lbs)

  • 1 can apple pie filling (draine syrup)

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard (optional but classic)

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon + a pinch of cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place ham in a baking dish or shallow roaster.

  2. In a small bowl, mix the drained pie filling, brown sugar, mustard, cinnamon and apple cider until blended.

  3. Spoon glaze over the ham, covering the surface evenly.

  4. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon and ground clove over the top.

  5. Bake 1 hour or until heated through, basting with glaze occasionally.

  6. Slice and serve warm with extra glaze spooned over the top.

Tip: When draining the apples from the glaze, I place a colander over a bowl, pour in the pie filling, then gently lift out the apples. That way, all the glossy pie glaze collects below and I can use every drop as the ham glaze. Then a lay a couple apples in the pan with the ham.
